Archet Médiéval / Medieval bow

Je viens de compléter cet archet médiéval, fabriqué dans du noyer. Il à été vendu à Femke Bergsma de L'Ensemble Eya.

I just finished this medieval bow. It has been made in walnut. And sold to Femke Bergsma from the Eya ensemble.

Violon des JMM Vendu / YMM Violin sold

C'est avec grand plaisir que je peux officiellement annoncer que le violon fabriqué pour pouvoir aider les Jeunes musiciens du monde à été vendu. Toutes mes félicitations au nouveau propriétaire. Le montant de la vente à été intégralement remis à l'organisme.

This is with great pride that I can officially announce that the Young musician of the world violin has been sold. Congratulations to the new owner. The sale amount will be integrally donated to the organization.

This violin has just been sold. Congratulation to its new owner: John Showman of the Creaking Tree String Quartet band from Toronto. You can see him playing his new violin during the Grand-Rencontre festival in Montréal.

Mémoire & Racines

Cet été (du 27 au 29 juillet 2007), je vais être présent au festival de musique traditionnelle: Mémoire & Racines ou vous pourrez venir essayer mes instruments et archets. J'espère avoir le plaisir de vous y voir.

Exposition à Pointe-Claire / Pointe-Claire exhibition

Dans les cadre des Rendez-vous Culturels de Pointe-Claire J'ai été invité à exposer mon travail et faire une démonstration de lutherie en même temps que l'exposition d'instruments anciens organisé par Gilles Plante de l'Ensemble Claude-Gervaise.

In the context of the Cultural Rendez-vous of Pointe-Claire I have been invited to exhibit my work and do a violin making demonstration during the antiques instruments exhibition organized by Gilles Plante from the Ensemble Claude-Gervaise group.

Exposition "One of a kind" exibit

Je vais exposer mes instruments à Toronto à la fin du mois au salon des métiers d'art de Toronto le One of a kind show . Je vais y représenter l'école de lutherie de Québec. Je serais heureux de vous y rencontrer si vous êtes à Toronto.

I am going to show my instruments in Toronto at the end of the month in the One of a kind show . I have been asked to represent the Quebec violin and guitar making school. I will be happy to meet you there if you are in Toronto that week.

Le rebec est complété / The rebec has been completed

Je vient de terminer le rebec. Et il à été vendu à Liette Remon qui fait partie, entre-autres de l'ensemble Strada. Sur les photos suivantes, vous pouvez voir la reconstitution de l'instrument médiéval et de son archet. Le son de cet instrument est assez fort et nasillard. À la demande de Liette, j'ai monté le rébec avec des cordes de métal pour faire encore plus ressortir cette caractéristique.

I just finished the rebec. It has been sold to Liette Remon who plays with Strada, and others groups. On the following pictures you can see the reconstitution on this medieval instrument and its bow. This instrument has a strong bright and nasal voice. As required by Liette, I did the set-up with metal strings to emphasize this characteristic.

I am currently finishing building the rebec. The following pictures shows the instrument in its current finishing state.

Encan des JMM / JMM auction

L'encan de l'instrument construit pour les JMM commence jeudi 23 Novembre au palais des congrès de Québec. La mise à prix sera de 3000$. Cet encan va durer pendant une période de deux mois pour laisser le temps aux personnes intéressées de venir essayer l'instrument (Sur rendez-vous). Comme je me déplace aussi régulièrement sur Montréal, il sera aussi possible de prendre rendez-vous et faire un essai de l'instrument. Ci dessous vous pouvez voir les photos de l'instrument terminé. The JMM instrument auction begin this thursday November 23rd at the "Palais des congrès" in Quebec city. The starting price will be 3000$. This auction will be held for 2 month to give enough time to every one interested to try the instrument (On appointment). As I am regularly going to Montreal it will be also possible to take some appointments there and try the instrument. Below you can see the pictures of the finished violin. Le violon des JMM est prêt / The JMM violin is ready !

Le violon des Jeunes Musiciens du Monde est prêt ! Ci-dessous vous pouvez voir les premières photos du violon terminé. Je l'ai monté avec des accessoires en buis pour respecter le style de forme relativement baroque de ce modèle. Ce violon va être exposé et joué ce soir (le 17 Novembre) au Métropolis de Montréal durant le cocktail donné par JMM lors de son financement. Il sera aussi montré à Québec le 23 Novembre au palais des congrès. La vente aux enchères de cet instrument débute donc ce soir. Et le montant de la vente sera remis intégralement aux Jeunes Musiciens du Monde.

The Young musicians of the world violin is ready ! Below you can see the first pictures of the finished violin. I have done the setup with boxwood accessories to respect the baroque style of this model. This violin will be exhibited and played tonight ( Nov 17) at the Métropolis in Montréal during the annual fund raising event. It will also be displayed in Quebec city on November 23rd at the "Palais des congrès". The auction of this instrument is starting tonight. And the total amount of the sale will be donated to Young Musicians of the World.

Le vernis / The varnish

Je vient de terminer de vernir le violon. Je remercie d'ailleurs l'École nationale de lutherie qui m'a permis d'utiliser son local de vernis et sa boite à uv. Comme vous pouvez le voir sur les photos suivantes. J'ai utilisé un vernis à l'huile de ma composition et fabrication. C'est un vernis d'une belle transparence et d'une couleur ambrée avec des reflets rouges. Je vais maintenant le laisser durcir avant de polir et faire le montage final de l'instrument.

I just finished varnishing the violin. On that subject, I thanks the Violin Making School. The school gave me access to their varnish room and uv box. As you can see on the pictures below. I have used an oil varnish that I made. This varnish has a nice amber tone with some reddish tint and is very transparent. I am now going to let it harden before polishing and setting up the instrument.

Et voila ! That's it !

Le violon est assemblé. Il est comme on le dit: "en blanc". C'est à dire qu'il est fini, mais non verni et non monté. Je vais maintenant faire de la finition et le préparer pour commencer le vernissage.

The violin has been assembled. As we say it is "in white". This means that it is finished, but not yet varnished and set-up. I am now going to do some finishing and prepare it for the varnish.

Toutes les pièces ! All the components !

Voici une photo qui montre toutes les pièces princpiales du violon. Il me reste à fermer la caisse, enclaver le manche et finir la poignée. Et ensuite vernir l'instrument et faire le montage final.

Here is a picture that shows all the main violin components. I have now to close the body, insert the neck and finish the handle. And after that, varnish and set-up the instrument.

Dessus fini / Top completed

Le dessus est terminé ! J'ai fini la mise d'épaisseur, découpé les f, collé, façonné et accordé la barre d'harmonie. Je vais maintenant pouvoir fermer la caisse de résonnance du violon.

The top is done ! I have finished graduating it, cut the f-holes, glued, shaped and tuned the bass-bar. I am know ready to close the body of the violin.

Assemblage du violon / Assembly of the violin

Comme vous pouvez le voir sur la photo suivante, j'ai commencé à assembler le violon. J'ai collé la couronne d'éclisses sur le fond. Et j'ai ajouté les contres éclisses sur le côté du dessus.

As you may see on the next picture. I have started the assembly of the violin. I have glued the ribs on the bottom plate. And I have added the linings on the top side.


J'ai aussi collé une étiquette pour identifier le violon et l'associer au "Jeunes musiciens du monde":

Mise d'épaisseur / thinning the plates

Comme vous pouvez le voir ci-dessous, j'ai creusé les tables (Fond et dessus) pour enlever le bois en trop. Je suis en train maintenant de les mettres d'épaisseur et d'aller chercher la bonne flexibilité:

As you can see below, I have carved the inside of the plates (Top and Bottom) to remove the unnecessary wood. I am know carving them to reach the right thickness and the right flexibility:



Une fois les tables accordées, je vais pouvoir découper les ff et ajouter la barre d'harmonie sur la table du dessus.

As soon as the plates will be tunes, I will be able to cut the f-holes, and add the bass-bar on the top plate.

La volute / The scroll
